The Forgotten Lives Project: 2013-2017

220 images Created 13 May 2021

I’m a digital collage artist and photographer and collector of vintage photographs – daguerreotypes, tintypes, and cabinet card portraits from the mid to late 1800s. I am intrigued by the people in these portraits and curious about their stories. In the time of early photography, were they wondering how they would be remembered? This question fascinates me and inspires me to create something new, in honor of them.

Using my own photography, I create dreamlike scenarios, new atmospheres and worlds for these people to inhabit. All elements in these collages – flowers, trees, landscapes, skies – are images I have photographed myself. I meticulously piece these elements together to tell a new story and make a statement. I call this "The Forgotten Lives Project", but I hope that they will no longer be forgotten.

You will find the the original, unedited portraits alongside my edits. Note: for optimal viewing of this gallery, choose 'Large Image View' in the bottom left corner of this page.

Ye say they all have passed away,
That noble race and brave,
That their light canoes have vanished
From off the crested wave
That 'mid the forests where they roamed
There rings no hunter's shout;
But their name is on your waters,
Ye may not wash it out. - Lydia Huntley Sigourney
